Background
The Malaysian Insider was an independent Malaysian news website owned by the Edge Media Group, popular in both Malaysia and Singapore since 2008.
On 25 February 2016 the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) blocked access to The Malaysian Insider (TMI) news portal. Consequently, with no Internet traffic, the owners reluctantly shut down the portal at midnight on 15 March 2016.
The MCMC imposed the ban after alleging that content published by The Malaysian Insider violated Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The context, however, is that the action against The Malaysian Insider was not unique. Following international, and then local, allegations of massive fraud in what is now known as the 1MDB scandal, the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s regime tried to suppress any criticism of the government and particularly tried to dismiss allegations of corruption against the Prime Minister. However, Najib was subsequently charged with several offences and the scale of the corruption was revealed in terms of billions of dollars. Truth eventually prevailed.
