Background
When an aircraft is involved in an accident the Reports generally refer to the incident using the flight code - for example, MH370. If the accident involves loss of life or, as in the case of MH370, the aircraft is missing, then the flight code is changed for subsequent flights.
The registration number of the aircraft is used in reports and other documentation. The aircraft operated by Malaysia Airlines for the missing flight MH370 was one of their fleet of Boeing 777 twin-engine jet aircraft, registered 9M-MRO.
Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200-ER registered 9M-MRO was used for flight MH370 which went missing on Saturday, 8 March 2014. Captain Zaharie Shah was the Pilot-in-Command, with First Officer Fariq Bin Ab Hamid.
