<h5>Background</h5>
<p>The Aircraft Communications Addressing & Reporting System, generally referred to simply as ACARS, is used to send messages to and from aircraft. The communication modes can be via VHF radio or via a satellite communications link (SATCOM). </p>
<p>ACARS is significant in the saga of flight MH370 because in the early part of the flight all communications were normal. Then a position report (due every 30 minutes) was not received at the ground. ACARS may have been disabled, but it is more accurate to suggest that the SATCOM was disabled and ACARS could not use the SATCOM data link. Perhaps both were disabled.</p>
