Bayes' Theorem and the search for Air France flight AF447

Air France flight AF447 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on 1 June 2009. The approximate location was known; the first floating debris was recovered on Day 5; and the surface search continued for 26 days.

However, the underwater search took nearly two years, during which the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA) sought assistance from an American company, Metron Inc., based in Virginia, because of their success with prior searches using a statistical technique known as Bayes' Theorem.

After an initial lack of success, Metron revised the assumptions, refined the target area and the wreckage was found - 671 days after the flight went missing.
